Twelve Things I Actually Checked Before Accepting That My WiFi Was “Just Slow”

For a long time I assumed “slow WiFi” was just something you lived with unless you paid for a faster plan. It turned out most of what was wrong was fixable in an afternoon, without spending anything. Here’s the full list I worked through, in the order that made the most sense to check.

1. Run a real baseline test first. Before changing anything, I used Speedtest.net in three different rooms at two different times of day. This told me immediately whether the problem was consistent everywhere (likely a router or plan issue) or specific to certain rooms and times (likely placement or congestion).

2. Restart properly, not just quickly. Unplug the router, wait a genuine 30-60 seconds, plug it back in, and let it fully reconnect before testing again. Routers that run for weeks or months without a break do accumulate small glitches that a proper restart clears.

3. Move it out of hiding. Mine had been tucked into a cabinet for longer than I want to admit. An open shelf at roughly shoulder height, away from walls and metal appliances, made a bigger difference than any setting I changed afterward.

4. Actually check which band your devices are using. Most routers offer 2.4GHz (longer range, slower, more crowded) and 5GHz (faster, shorter range, cleaner). I found my laptop defaulting to 2.4GHz even sitting right next to the router — manually switching it to 5GHz gave an immediate, obvious speed increase for that device specifically.

5. Scan for channel congestion. A free WiFi analyzer app showed several neighboring networks sharing my default 2.4GHz channel. Manually selecting a clearer channel (1, 6, or 11 are the standard non-overlapping options) reduced the kind of random slowdowns I’d been blaming on nothing in particular.

6. Update the firmware. This doesn’t happen automatically on most routers. Mine had an update sitting untouched in the admin panel for what looked like months.

7. Go through the connected device list. I found an old tablet and a smart plug I no longer use, both still quietly connected and occasionally checking in for updates in the background. Removing what you don’t actually need connected frees up real bandwidth.

8. Wire what actually benefits from it. My smart TV sits about ten feet from the router with a clean path for a cable. Running Ethernet to it instead of relying on WiFi noticeably improved streaming stability, which makes sense — wired connections don’t compete for the same wireless spectrum as everything else in the house.

9. Consider whether the router itself has simply aged out. Mine was pushing six years old. Newer routers aren’t just “faster” in a vague sense — they handle more simultaneous device connections far more gracefully, which matters more now than it used to given how many devices a typical home runs at once.

10. Turn on Quality of Service if your router has it. Buried under advanced settings on mine, QoS lets you prioritize specific devices or traffic types — I set my work laptop as high priority, which stopped video calls from degrading whenever someone else in the house started streaming.

11. For larger or multi-floor homes, think mesh rather than a single stronger router. A single unit, however good, has real limits pushing signal through multiple floors or a large footprint. Mesh nodes solve coverage in a way that repositioning one router alone can’t.

12. Rule out background bandwidth use. Operating system updates, cloud backups, and game downloads all run silently and can eat a surprising amount of bandwidth without any obvious sign on screen. Pausing these before testing gives you a clearer picture of what your connection can actually do.

What actually moved the needle most, in my experience: placement first, then correcting which band my closest devices were using, then wiring the one device that benefited most from a stable connection. Firmware updates and device cleanup didn’t show up as dramatically in speed tests, but they were worth doing regardless.

If you only have twenty minutes to spare rather than a full afternoon, start with placement and band-checking — that’s where most of the improvement tends to live, and neither one costs anything.
