Before spending money on a new router or mesh system, I wanted to see how far I could get using only what I already had. Turned out to be further than expected.
Repositioning came first and mattered most. My router had been sitting on the floor in a corner. Moving it to a central, elevated spot — a shelf roughly in the middle of the apartment — improved every room without spending a cent.
Switching my old, retired router into repeater mode. Most routers have a setting somewhere in advanced options to run as a repeater or bridge rather than a primary router. I dug an old one out of a closet, enabled this mode, and placed it in the room that had been struggling most — instant improvement in that specific spot.
Manually picking a WiFi channel instead of leaving it on auto. A free analyzer app showed my building had several networks crowding the same default channel. Switching to a clearer one reduced congestion-related slowdowns noticeably.
Splitting my network into separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz names. This let me manually put far-away, low-bandwidth devices (smart plugs, sensors) on 2.4GHz for range, and nearby devices that needed speed on 5GHz — rather than trusting the router’s automatic band selection, which wasn’t always making the choice I’d have picked.
Using my laptop’s mobile hotspot feature temporarily when I needed WiFi in a spot the main network genuinely couldn’t reach — not a permanent fix, but useful in a pinch for something like a temporary desk setup in a room I don’t normally use.
Checking antenna orientation on my router. Mine has two external antennas. Angling one vertically and one horizontally spread the signal across more directions than having both pointed the same way, which helped with a room slightly off to the side and one floor down.
Clearing out interference sources. Moving the router further from the microwave and an old cordless phone base station — both of which operate on frequencies that overlap with 2.4GHz WiFi — reduced random dropouts in the kitchen specifically.
Trying the aluminum foil trick, out of curiosity more than expectation. Curving a piece of foil behind the router to reflect signal forward, away from a wall that led to unused space, gave a small but real improvement toward the rooms I actually needed. It’s not a serious engineering solution, but it costs nothing and took two minutes to test.
What I’d actually recommend trying first
Placement and channel selection gave the most noticeable results for the least effort. The repeater trick using an old router was the best “free” fix if you happen to have spare hardware lying around, which a lot of households do without realizing it.
When this approach reaches its limit
If you’ve tried all of this and specific rooms are still consistently weak, that’s the point where a proper mesh node or extender becomes worth the cost — but it’s worth exhausting the free options first, since in my case they solved most of what I originally assumed would need new hardware.
